Summary

Cyclin E expression is common in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and linked to advanced disease. High cyclin E levels may serve as a new prognostic marker for PTC patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cyclin E is crucial for cell cycle regulation and implicated in cancer development.
  • The role of cyclin E in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has not been previously established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of cyclin E in PTC.
  • To analyze the correlation between cyclin E expression and clinicopathological features of PTC.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry was used to assess cyclin E expression in 41 PTC samples.
  • Staining results were graded and correlated with tumor stage (pT1a-pT4) and lymph node metastasis.

Main Results:

  • Cyclin E was expressed in 75.6% of PTCs, with higher prevalence (90.4%) in tumors staged higher than pT1a.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Papillary microcarcinomas (PMCs) showed significantly lower cyclin E expression compared to larger PTCs.
  • A positive correlation was found between cyclin E staining index and the T factor of PTC staging.
  • All lymph node metastases were associated with cyclin E expression, and most with overexpression.
  • Conclusions:

    • Cyclin E expression is frequent in PTC and associated with tumor progression and metastasis.
    • Cyclin E may play a significant role in PTC oncogenesis and biological behavior.
    • Elevated cyclin E levels could potentially serve as a novel prognostic biomarker for PTC.
