Abstract:
Extended hypervalent Br(4) 4c-6e and Se(2)Br(5) 7c-10e bonds are detected in nonionic bromine adducts of selenanthrene, where the four Br(4) and seven Se(2)Br(5) atoms align linearly.

Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate.
