Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of first-occurrence status epilepticus (SE) in a population-based twin cohort.
  • To investigate the role of genetic factors in the susceptibility to SE.

  • A population-based sample of 13,506 unselected Virginia-born twin pairs was ascertained.
  • Medical records and interviews were used to validate seizure and SE history in twins aged 2-75 years.
