Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Clinical Chemistry

Background:

  • Anemia detection is crucial for public health.
  • Traditional hemoglobin estimation methods can be time-consuming.
  • Field-based anemia screening requires efficient and reliable techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate modified Drabkin methods for hemoglobin estimation.
  • To assess the suitability of Filter Drabkin (FD) and Special Filter Drabkin (SFD) for large-scale anemia screening.
  • To compare the accuracy of SFD with the standard Direct Drabkin (DD) method.

Main Methods:

  • Hemoglobin estimation was performed on 132 EDTA blood samples.
  • Three methods were used: Direct Drabkin (DD), Filter Drabkin (FD), and Special Filter Drabkin (SFD).
  • Statistical analysis was conducted to compare the results of the different methods.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Hemoglobin estimations by DD and FD showed good agreement.
  • SFD, utilizing a punch diameter of 10.6-10.7 mm, also demonstrated strong correlation with DD.
  • The SFD method proved reliable for anemia screening.

Conclusions:

  • Modified Drabkin methods, particularly SFD, offer a viable approach for anemia detection in large populations.
  • SFD is an effective and accurate tool for field-based anemia screening studies.
  • The study validates SFD as a practical alternative to traditional methods for public health initiatives.
