Objective:
To investigate a potential mechanism of invasion and metastasis of oral cancers, and the possibility of the adhesion molecules being markers for evaluating the prognosis of oral cancers.
Methods:
Randomly selecting achieved paraffin blocks, including 60 cases of squamous cell carcinoma(SCC), 30 cases of verrucous carcinoma(VC) of oral mucosa and 30 cases of basal cell carcinoma(BCC) of epidermis. Using immunohistochemistry method (Envision) to detect the expression of CD44v6 antibody and observe under light microscope.
Results:
The expression level of CD44v6 protein in SCC had no significant difference between SCC and VC, but significant differences of CD44v6 expression were showed between BCC and SCC(P<0.01), as well BCC and VC(P<0.01).
Conclusion:
CD44v6 takes part in the homogeneous adhesion of normal oral mucosa and epidermis and may play a role in maintaining the characteristics of epithelial differentiation, but it has shown no correlation with the biological behavior of oral cancers.
