Summary

Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery can worsen Avellino corneal dystrophy (ACD) by increasing corneal opacities. Mechanical removal of deposits is ineffective, but mitomycin C may help.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Corneal Diseases
  • Refractive Surgery

Background:

  • Avellino corneal dystrophy (ACD) is a genetic condition causing corneal opacities.
  • Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common refractive surgery for myopia.

Observation:

  • LASIK surgery exacerbated granular corneal deposits in patients with ACD.
  • Corneal opacities appeared 12 months or more post-LASIK.
  • Visual acuity decreased with increased opacity density.

Findings:

  • All ACD patients studied were heterozygous for the ACD gene.
  • Mechanical removal of interface deposits led to recurrence in one patient.
  • Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) with mitomycin C showed potential in preventing recurrence.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • LASIK is contraindicated in patients with ACD due to worsening corneal opacities.
  • Surgical removal of deposits alone is insufficient to prevent recurrence.
  • Mitomycin C combined with surgical removal may offer a treatment option for post-LASIK ACD exacerbations.
