Catheter-based cryoablation permanently cures patients with common atrial flutter

Background:

• Cryoablation offers short-term success for atrial flutter (AFL) but lacks long-term efficacy data.
• This study evaluates the long-term outcomes of cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) cryoablation for common AFL.

Purpose of the Study:

• To assess the long-term effectiveness and safety of CTI cryoablation in patients with common AFL.
• To determine if cryoablation achieves permanent conduction block at the CTI.

• Thirty-five patients with common AFL underwent cryoablation of the CTI using a 6-mm-tip electrode catheter.
• A point-by-point technique delivered 3-5 minute applications at a mean temperature of -80°C.
• The primary endpoint was bidirectional isthmus conduction block and AFL non-inducibility.

• Acute success was achieved in 34 of 35 patients (97%).
• After a mean follow-up of 17.6 months, 31 patients (89%) remained free of AFL recurrence.
