Background:

The OECD Screening Information Data Set (SIDS) project assesses risks of high production volume (HPV) chemicals.
Over 1000 HPV chemicals have undergone assessment.
Abbreviated reproduction and developmental toxicity screening tests (OECD test guidelines 421 and 422) were developed for the SIDS project.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the utility of abbreviated reproduction and developmental toxicity screening tests (OECD test guidelines 421 and 422) within the OECD SIDS project.
To determine if these tests provide useful data for initial hazard assessment of HPV chemicals.

Main Methods:

Utilized OECD test guidelines 421 and 422 for abbreviated reproduction and developmental toxicity screening.
Conducted initial hazard assessments for 54 substances using these guidelines within the SIDS project framework.

Main Results:

The abbreviated tests provide useful data for initial hazard assessment of HPV chemicals.
These tests are accepted in the USA and Japan for initial reproductive and developmental toxicity evaluations.
OECD-approved SIDS initial assessments were based on data from these tests for 54 substances.

Conclusions:

Abbreviated reproduction and developmental toxicity screening tests (OECD 421/422) are valuable tools for the initial hazard assessment of high production volume chemicals.
These screening tests contribute effectively to the OECD SIDS project's goals for prioritizing further chemical safety work.
