Summary

Multichannel electrogastrography (EGG) significantly improves detecting abnormal gastric activity in patients with GI symptoms. Extending the postprandial recording to two hours further enhances diagnostic accuracy for both multichannel and single-channel EGG.

Background:

  • Symptomatic patients often present diagnostic challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare multichannel EGG with conventional single-channel EGG.
  • To evaluate the impact of extended postprandial recording duration.
  • To determine diagnostic yield in patients with upper GI symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • 47 patients with GI symptoms and 18 healthy controls underwent EGG.
  • Four electrodes were used for multichannel EGG on the antral axis.
  • Recordings included 1-hour fasting and 2-hour postprandial periods.

Main Results:

  • Multichannel EGG identified abnormal gastric activity in 51% of patients over 2 hours, versus 34% for single-channel EGG.
  • Extending postprandial recording to 2 hours increased detection rates for both methods.
  • Abnormalities were detected in 60% of patients with multichannel EGG and 2-hour recordings.

Conclusions:

  • Multichannel EGG offers superior detection of abnormal gastric myoelectric activity.
  • Prolonging postprandial EGG recordings to 2 hours increases diagnostic yield.
  • These findings support the use of extended multichannel EGG for symptomatic patients.
