Context:

  • Onychophagy, or habitual nail-biting, is a common condition affecting both children and adults.
  • It is classified as a nail disease resulting from repeated self-inflicted injuries.
  • In children, it can be a coping mechanism for anxiety, loneliness, or lack of security.

Purpose:

  • To highlight the varying clinical presentations of onychophagy.
  • To advocate for a multidisciplinary therapeutic strategy for habitual nail-biting.

Summary:

  • Onychophagy is a prevalent condition characterized by compulsive nail-biting, leading to nail diseases and injuries.
  • While often viewed as a habit, especially in children where it can relieve psychological distress, its impact on adults is significant.
  • This study emphasizes that psychiatric disorders are not typically diagnosed in adults with onychophagy, despite the severity of the condition.

Impact:

  • This research promotes a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to managing onychophagy.
  • Understanding the behavioral and dermatological aspects is crucial for effective treatment.
  • The findings encourage integrated therapeutic interventions for improved patient outcomes in treating nail-biting.
