Background:

  • Hyperthyroidism is a hypermetabolic state.
  • It involves increased oxygen utilization and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
  • This leads to measurable changes in antioxidative factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the balance of antioxidative factors in women with hyperthyroidism.
  • To compare antioxidant status in newly diagnosed Graves' disease and hyperthyroid patients on methimazole therapy versus healthy controls.
  • To explore the role of oxidative stress in hyperthyroidism.

Main Methods:

  • Measured whole blood glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities.
  • Assessed total antioxidant status (TAS) in serum and erythrocytes.

  • Determined serum urate and transferrin concentrations in 70 women (14 with Graves' disease, 28 on methimazole, 28 controls).
