Neural representations in the brain

Background:

  • The ventral visual pathway is known for topographically organized, category-related neural response patterns.
  • It remains debated whether these patterns represent sensory images or abstract object form independent of sensory input.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the nature of object representations in the ventral visual pathway.
  • To determine if these representations are modality-dependent (visual vs. tactile) or abstract.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was employed.
  • Neural responses were measured during visual and tactile object recognition in sighted individuals.
  • Tactile recognition was also assessed in blind individuals.

  • Both visual and tactile recognition elicited category-related neural patterns in the ventral extrastriate visual cortex (inferior temporal gyrus).

  • Object representations in the ventral visual pathway are not solely based on visual imagery.
