Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England·2024

Area of Science:

  • Oral surgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Head and neck trauma and burns often result in scar contractures.
  • Fibrotic tissues and scar bands can limit mouth opening (trismus).
  • Restoring jaw mobility is crucial for function and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the fabrication and use of a novel expansion prosthesis.
  • To provide an accessible and effective treatment for limited jaw opening.
  • To offer a patient-controlled rehabilitation device.

Main Methods:

  • The prosthesis is fabricated in a single clinical appointment.
  • Utilizes readily available materials: Triad resin and a 7 mm expansion screw.
  • Customizable design allows for progressive jaw opening.

Main Results:

  • The prosthesis effectively stretches commissures and fibrotic muscles.
  • Varying degrees of jaw opening are achievable based on usage.
  • The device is inexpensive and easily modifiable.

Conclusions:

  • This expansion prosthesis is a cost-effective and convenient solution for post-traumatic trismus.
  • Patient-controlled pressure application enhances usability and compliance.
  • Facilitates rehabilitation and improves functional outcomes for head and neck injury patients.
