Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Regional Anesthesia

Context:

  • The parascalene block is an alternative regional anesthesia technique for upper extremity surgery.
  • Evaluating long-term efficacy and complication rates is crucial for establishing its clinical utility.
  • Understanding anatomical landmarks and needle techniques is key to successful block performance.

Purpose:

  • To assess the efficacy and complication profile of the parascalene block over a decade of clinical application.
  • To compare the safety of the parascalene block with other supraclavicular approaches.
  • To determine the success rate and anesthetic quality for shoulder and arm surgeries.

Summary:

  • The parascalene block was performed on 2810 patients using the aponeurotic click method with 1.5% mepivacaine and catheter insertion for supplemental doses.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The technique demonstrated an overall success rate of 89.82%, with excellent or good anesthetic efficacy in 87.55% of cases.
  • Common complications included Bernard-Horner syndrome (71.31%) and hemidiaphragm paralysis (95.72%), with no instances of pneumothorax or neuroaxial complications.
  • Impact:

    • The parascalene block is a simple, safe, and effective regional anesthesia technique.
    • It offers a lower probability of serious complications compared to other supraclavicular methods.
    • This technique provides reliable surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia for shoulder and arm procedures.
