Summary

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) showed moderate effects on plasma lipids in menopausal women. Transdermal estradiol increased HDL-cholesterol more than oral therapy, while both decreased triglycerides.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Cardiovascular Health
  • Menopause Management

Background:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is known to influence plasma lipid levels.
  • The specific effects of HRT on lipids depend on the therapy mode and drug administration route.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of two different types of HRT on plasma lipid levels in menopausal women.

Main Methods:

  • A two-year prospective study involving two groups of menopausal women.
  • Group A received transdermal 17-beta estradiol.
  • Group B received oral estradiol valerate and levonorgestrel in cycles.

Main Results:

  • Both HRT types significantly decreased triglyceride levels.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Transdermal estradiol (Group A) led to a significantly higher increase in HDL-cholesterol compared to oral therapy (Group B).
  • No significant differences were observed in total cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol levels between the groups.
  • Conclusions:

    • The impact of HRT on plasma lipid profiles is moderate and varies based on administration route.
    • HRT's influence on lipids is considered mild, individual, and offers slight benefits to the lipid spectrum.
