Summary

Ultrasound (US) can detect early kidney damage in diabetic patients, even before symptoms appear. These findings suggest US is a valuable prognostic tool for diabetic nephropathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate ultrasound (US) findings in the kidneys of diabetic patients.
  • To detect early anatomical lesions predictive of renal injury using US.
  • To correlate US patterns with histological findings in diabetic nephropathy.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound examination of kidneys in diabetic subjects without clinical signs of nephropathy.
  • Histological examination of kidneys from diabetic cadavers for correlation.
  • Analysis of US patterns (diffuse vs. focal) and their association with diabetes type and duration.

  • Ultrasound alterations were observed in 50% of diabetic kidneys.
  • Focal lesions (hyperechoic spots) were found in 39% and diffuse alterations in 9%.
