Area of Science:

  • Health Informatics
  • Information Management Systems

Background:

  • Initiated in 2001, the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) planned a large-scale Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems (IAIMS) implementation.
  • The initiative aimed to integrate unaffiliated institutions across a wide area.

Observation:

  • Unique elements included existing network infrastructure (Indianapolis Network for Patient Care), a mature medical informatics program, and a wide-area knowledge network.
  • A lack of strong information technology leadership at IUSM hindered collaboration across Indianapolis hospital systems.

Findings:

  • Strategic directions for the I3-Indianapolis IAIMS Initiative were defined by uniting various groups committed to improving healthcare and public health.
  • Foundations for a third-generation IAIMS construct were established in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This initiative established a model for cross-institutional collaboration in health informatics.
  • The project advanced the development of integrated health information systems for improved healthcare delivery and public health outcomes.
