The present state of knowledge about bipolar disorder in childhood is reviewed. Adolescent bipolar disorder with ultradian rapid cycling, irritability, dysphoria and psychotic features, and the frequent complication of substance abuse and conduct disorder, is described. The pre-pubertal, more continuous, manic disorder and its differentiation from ADHD is discussed. The paper ends with a description of treatment and studies of different mood stabilizers.
