Abstract:
LDL cholesterol concentrations are still routinely estimated from results of cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol measurements. Deficiencies in this approach are discussed and sources of uncertainty in the estimation highlighted. It is concluded that random variation in the estimated LDL is less than the systematic deviation in the target concentration interval for statin treatment and that an increased use of apolipoprotein measurements would enhance diagnosis and treatment of hyperlipemia.
