Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Metabolic Disorders

Context:

  • Statins are the primary treatment for hypercholesterolaemia.
  • Some patients do not respond adequately or tolerate statin therapy.
  • Lipoprotein apheresis offers an alternative for managing severe hypercholesterolaemia.

Purpose:

  • To review the efficacy and safety of LDL apheresis.
  • To assess the current utilization of LDL apheresis in Norway.
  • To advocate for broader access to LDL apheresis.

Summary:

  • LDL apheresis is a safe and effective method for reducing LDL cholesterol levels.
  • The procedure has been shown to decrease mortality and morbidity in specific patient populations.
  • Current data suggests underutilization of LDL apheresis in Norway.

Impact:

  • Increased availability of LDL apheresis across all Norwegian health regions is recommended.
  • Enhanced awareness among clinicians treating severe hypercholesterolaemia and coronary artery disease is crucial.
  • Improved patient outcomes through timely access to advanced lipid-lowering therapies.
