Summary

Women with fibromyalgia syndrome show altered thyroid function, including lower thyroid hormone secretion and higher prolactin levels after thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation. They also exhibit lower calcium and calcitonin levels.

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia syndrome (FS) is a chronic pain disorder with complex pathophysiology.
  • Thyroid dysfunction can present with symptoms overlapping those of FS.
  • Previous research on thyroid function in FS has yielded inconsistent results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate thyroid and prolactin responses to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in female patients with primary fibromyalgia syndrome.
  • To compare serum calcium, calcitonin, and parathyroid hormone levels between FS patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Intravenous administration of 400 micrograms of TRH to 13 female patients with primary FS and 10 age-matched healthy controls.
  • Measurement of basal and TRH-stimulated thyrotropin, thyroid hormones, and prolactin levels over a 2-hour period.

    • These findings suggest potential endocrine contributions to fibromyalgia symptoms and warrant further investigation.
