Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sleep Medicine

Background:

  • Hypnic headache syndrome is a rare primary headache disorder.
  • It is characterized by recurrent headaches that awaken the patient from sleep.

Observation:

  • A case of hypnic headache syndrome with nocturnal headache attacks during REM sleep was studied.
  • Overnight polysomnography captured a headache attack during REM sleep.
  • The patient experienced poor sleep quality with desaturation episodes, but the headache was not linked to desaturation.

Findings:

  • This case supports a connection between hypnic headache syndrome and REM sleep.
  • Lithium therapy was effective in reducing the intensity and frequency of headache attacks.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research into the neurobiological mechanisms linking REM sleep and hypnic headache is warranted.
  • Lithium may be a viable treatment option for managing hypnic headache syndrome.
