Abstract:
Non-insulinodependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or Type 2 diabetes mellitus concerns in 2003 more than 185 million people in the world, a number likely to double by 2025. Occurring in genetically predisposed individuals, NIDDM is favoured by excessive body weight and sedentarity. Individuals affected by NIDDM have a high risk of cardio-vascular disease, their management requires a multifactorial approach. Lifestyle changes are efficient in preventing, or at least delaying, NIDDM. In concerted action with the World Health Organisation, the International Diabetes Federation has launched an awareness campaign to sensitize governments and health authorities to the current diabetes epidemics.
