Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CA) is a rare, aggressive cancer. Tumor size, invasion depth, positive margins, and recurrence are key predictors of poor outcomes in CA patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CA) is a rare and aggressive endothelial-derived sarcoma.
  • Limited large-scale studies exist on CA's clinicopathologic and prognostic factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify prognostic significance of demographic, histologic, and follow-up features in CA.
  • To analyze factors influencing tumor recurrence and metastases in CA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 47 CA patients.
  • Examined age, sex, location, depth, necrosis, morphology, mitoses, and margins.
  • Excluded specific CA subtypes (breast, irradiated sites, etc.).

Main Results:

  • Predominantly affected men (76%) aged 75.1 years, mostly in the head and neck (96%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Common presentation: rapidly expanding erythematous patch.
  • High 5-year local recurrence (84%) and low survival (34%), with frequent metastases.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tumor diameter (>5 cm), depth (>3 mm), positive margins, recurrence, and metastases strongly predict adverse outcomes.
    • Mitotic rate was significant in univariate but not multivariate analysis.
    • Demographic factors showed no association with outcome, confirming CA's poor prognosis.
