Histological and ultrastructural examination revealed intracellular and extracellular deposits in macular corneal dystrophy (MCD). This, along with pedigree analysis and pachymetry, aids in MCD diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Histopathology
  • Electron Microscopy

Background:

  • Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) is a rare inherited condition.
  • Patients often present with visual impairment and photophobia from childhood.

Observation:

  • A 34-year-old male with MCD underwent corneal button examination post-keratoplasty.
  • Histological and ultrastructural analyses were performed on corneal tissue.

Findings:

  • Light microscopy showed stromal delaminations and endothelial cell deficit with alcian blue deposits.
  • Electron microscopy revealed intracellular/extracellular deposits in stroma, Descemet membrane, and endothelium.
  • Keratocytes appeared distended with vacuoles; pedigree indicated autosomal recessive inheritance.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Histological and ultrastructural findings are crucial for diagnosing macular corneal dystrophy.
  • Corneal thickness measurement and pedigree analysis support accurate MCD diagnosis.
