Summary

This study on postcoital bleeding (PCB) found endometrial polyps can cause symptoms. While cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) was detected, invasive cancers were absent, suggesting a low cancer incidence in women experiencing PCB.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Reproductive Health
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Postcoital bleeding (PCB) is a concerning symptom for many women.
  • Understanding the causes and associations of PCB is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics and etiological factors associated with postcoital bleeding.
  • To determine the incidence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and lower genital tract cancers in patients presenting with PCB.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 248 patient records referred to a gynaecology department over a 5-year period.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, referral patterns, associated symptoms, and diagnosed conditions.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The majority of patients (63%) were aged 21-40 years and multiparous (80%).
  • Common findings included benign polyps (20%, including endometrial polyps) and cervical ectropion (25%).
  • Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) was detected in 6.8% of cases; no invasive cancers were found.

Conclusions:

  • Endometrial polyps are identified as a potential cause of postcoital bleeding.
  • Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) may present with symptoms like PCB.
  • The incidence of cervical or endometrial cancer in women with PCB appears to be low.
