Summary

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 2 score is a significant predictor of early surgical residency performance. Further research is needed to identify other factors influencing postgraduate year 1 success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify variables associated with Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY-1) performance in surgical training.
  • To analyze the predictive value of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 scores, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) election, and Grade Point Average (GPA) on PGY-1 performance.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 87 surgical graduates from 1997-2001 was evaluated using composite PGY-1 scores.
  • Data were collected via questionnaires sent to program directors.
