Mixtures of C4 and C5 alcohols from fusel oil can be used as organic media for lipase-mediated synthesis of laurate esters. Optimizing substrate ratios eliminated the need for additional solvents in this esterification process.
Area of Science:
- Biocatalysis and enzyme technology
- Organic synthesis
- Green chemistry
Background:
- Fusel oil, a byproduct of alcohol fermentation, contains valuable C4 and C5 aliphatic alcohols.
- Lipase-mediated esterification is a key process for synthesizing various esters, including laurate esters.
- Traditional esterification methods often rely on organic solvents, posing environmental and economic concerns.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility of using fusel oil-derived alcohol mixtures as bulk organic media for lipase-catalyzed laurate ester synthesis.
- To investigate the impact of reaction conditions, including substrate concentrations and temperature, on esterification efficiency.
- To determine if solvent addition can be eliminated by optimizing reaction parameters.
Main Methods:
- Reaction mixtures were prepared using lauric acid, lipase, and dehydrated fusel oil (C4-C5 alcohols).
- The influence of substrate concentrations (acyl donor to acyl acceptor molar ratio) and temperature was systematically studied.
- Inorganic salts and molecular sieves were used for dehydrating the fusel oil prior to use.
Main Results:
- Lipase-mediated esterification of lauric acid was successfully achieved using fusel oil mixtures as the organic medium.
- Increasing the molar ratio of acyl donor to acyl acceptor significantly enhanced the esterification reaction.
- Optimized substrate ratios enabled the reaction to proceed efficiently without the need for any additional organic solvent.
Conclusions:
- Mixtures of C4 and C5 aliphatic alcohols from fusel oil are effective and sustainable bulk organic media for lipase-mediated laurate ester synthesis.
- The elimination of external solvents through optimized substrate ratios aligns with green chemistry principles.
- This approach offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for industrial ester production.

Fates of Pyruvate
In aerobic organisms, pyruvate is metabolized via the citric acid cycle to produce reduced coenzymes NADH and FADH2. These coenzymes are then oxidized in the electron transport chain to produce ATP and, in the process, regenerate the NAD+ and FAD. As seen in some cell types and organisms, fermentation...
