Summary

Serum magnesium levels in elderly individuals, particularly those on loop diuretics, did not show significant differences compared to controls. Magnesium levels were also not significantly different in those who passed away during the study period.

  • Serum magnesium levels were measured in 156 elderly participants (aged 60-93).

    Conclusions:

    • Serum magnesium levels in the elderly, including those on loop diuretics, do not appear to be significantly altered in this study cohort.
    • The study suggests that standard serum magnesium measurements may require cautious interpretation, especially when methods for determining ionized or intracellular magnesium are unavailable.
