Background:

  • Suramin sodium, a long-standing chemotherapeutic agent, has a history of use in various diseases.
  • Its application in metastatic prostate carcinoma refractory to hormonal therapy was investigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively evaluate the incidence and types of skin toxicity associated with suramin sodium in patients with advanced prostate cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 20 patients with metastatic prostate carcinoma treated with suramin sodium.
  • Documentation of all observed skin reactions and their characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Cutaneous toxicity was observed in 13 out of 20 patients (65%).
  • Common reactions included generalized erythematous maculopapular eruptions (10 patients), which resolved within 3-5 days.
  • New associations with keratoacanthoma and disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis were noted in two and one patient, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Skin toxicity is a frequent, often self-limiting, side effect of suramin sodium therapy.
  • Keratoacanthoma and disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis represent novel cutaneous toxicities linked to suramin.
  • The immunosuppressive properties of suramin may contribute to the development of these specific skin lesions.
