Area of Science:

  • Dermatopathology
  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Atrophic dermatofibroma is a recently described variant of dermatofibroma.
  • Understanding its distinct features is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old female presented with a light brown, intracutaneous nodule on her thigh.
  • The lesion exhibited a central crateriform depression clinically.
  • Histological examination revealed fibrohistiocytic components within a thinned dermis.

Findings:

  • Elastica van Gieson staining showed a loss of elastic fibers in the lesional dermis.
  • A dense accumulation of elastic fibers was noted around medium-sized vessels.
  • These findings support the classification of atrophic dermatofibroma as a distinct entity.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the characteristic histopathological features of atrophic dermatofibroma.
  • Accurate identification aids in differentiating it from other fibrohistiocytic tumors.
  • Further research may clarify its pathogenesis and clinical behavior.
