Background:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating mental health condition.
  • Bupropion is an antidepressant medication used in MDD treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of bupropion in patients with MDD.
  • To investigate the relationship between bupropion blood levels and treatment response.

Main Methods:

  • An open-design protocol was used to treat 23 MDD patients with bupropion.
  • Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores were used to assess depression severity.
  • Patient trough blood levels of bupropion were measured.

Main Results:

  • 65.2% of patients (15 out of 23) showed a significant response, defined as >50% decrease in BDI scores.
  • Patients with trough bupropion blood levels between 10-29 ng/ml demonstrated a significantly better treatment response compared to those with levels ≥30 ng/ml.

Conclusions:

  • Bupropion is an effective treatment for a majority of MDD patients in this cohort.
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring of bupropion trough levels may be beneficial for optimizing treatment outcomes.
  • Further double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are warranted to confirm these findings.
