Summary

This study shows that patients in a minimally conscious state can process emotionally significant auditory stimuli. Their brains activate more to familiar sounds, indicating preserved cognitive function despite severe impairment.

Background:

  • Minimally conscious state (MCS) is a disorder of consciousness characterized by severely altered consciousness.

  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and cognitive evoked potentials are advanced neuroimaging techniques.

Observation:

  • A patient diagnosed with a minimally conscious state was studied.
  • Cerebral metabolism was significantly reduced, less than 50% of normal values.
  • The patient underwent functional assessment using PET and cognitive evoked potentials.

Findings:

  • Auditory stimuli with emotional significance (infant cries, patient's name) evoked widespread brain activation.
