Summary

Personality changes like apathy and loss of interest are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD). These changes are better predicted by disease severity and psychosis symptoms than by cognitive impairment alone.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Gerontology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
  • Personality and behavioral changes are frequently observed in AD patients.
  • Understanding these changes is crucial for patient care and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To profile personality changes in Alzheimer's disease patients.
  • To identify predictors of overall personality change in AD.
  • To differentiate personality changes from cognitive impairment in AD.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 80 Alzheimer's disease patients at a dementia clinic.
  • Utilized the Blessed Dementia Scale to measure personality changes.
  • Employed discriminant function analysis to identify predictors of personality change.

Main Results:

  • Diminished initiative/apathy (61.3%), relinquishment of hobbies (55.0%), and increased rigidity (41.3%) were the most common personality changes.
  • Sexual misdemeanor was the least frequent change (3.8%).
  • Global Deterioration Scale, psychosis symptoms, and symptom duration predicted overall personality change, not cognitive tests.

Conclusions:

  • Personality and behavioral changes are prevalent in Alzheimer's disease.
  • These changes are not solely attributable to intellectual impairment.
  • Disease severity and specific symptoms are better indicators of personality change than cognitive deficits.
