Idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification (ISC) is a benign condition of calcium deposits in the eye, often found incidentally. Systemic evaluation is recommended to rule out underlying metabolic causes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Calcium Metabolism

Background:

  • Idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification (ISC) involves calcium deposition in the sclera and choroid.
  • It typically affects older males asymptomatically, presenting as yellowish lesions in the fundus.
  • Diagnosis is often clinical, supported by ocular ultrasound and fluorescein angiography.

Observation:

  • An 85-year-old male presented with asymptomatic midperipheral yellowish-white deposits in both eyes.
  • Ocular ultrasound showed high reflectivity, indicative of calcium.
  • Fluorescein angiography revealed mild late-phase hyperfluorescence.

Findings:

  • Laboratory tests showed normal calcium and phosphorus metabolism.
  • The diagnosis of idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification was confirmed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The lesions were characterized as benign calcium deposits.
  • Implications:

    • ISC is a benign finding, often discovered during routine eye exams.
    • Systemic evaluation is crucial to exclude dystrophic or metastatic calcification.
    • Differential diagnoses include choroidal osteoma, melanoma, and metastatic carcinoma.
