Area of Science:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Surgical Procedures

Background:

  • Establishing a definitive airway is critical in emergency medicine.
  • Traditional tracheostomy often requires operating room settings and general anesthesia.

Observation:

  • Percutaneous tracheostomy can be performed by trained professionals outside the operating theatre.
  • A pre-packaged kit contains all necessary instruments for the procedure.
  • Bronchoscopy is not always required with increasing experience.

Findings:

  • Emergency percutaneous tracheostomy is a safe and effective method for airway management.
  • The procedure does not necessitate general anesthesia, enabling bedside performance.
  • It is adaptable to diverse emergency clinical scenarios demanding swift airway intervention.

Implications:

  • This technique provides a valuable alternative for emergency airway management.
  • It potentially reduces the need for operating room resources in critical care.
  • Wider adoption could improve patient outcomes in emergency settings.
