Prostate cancer chemoprevention: models, limitations and potential (Review)

Abstract:
The silent course of prostate cancer and its fatal outcome have hindered the development of treatment options for this disease. There is a need for new options in the management of prostate cancer. Chemoprevention is a relatively new and promising strategy, employing natural or synthetic agents to delay, halt or even reverse the process of carcinogenesis. Numerous synthetic and naturally occurring compounds have been evaluated in cell culture systems and in vivo models of prostate cancer for possible use in cancer chemopreventive programs. Here, I provide a review of studies of chemopreventive/therapeutic agents in various models of prostate cancer.
