Summary

Depression symptoms in older adults did not predict mortality. However, declines in health, functional status, and being male were associated with increased mortality risk in this community study.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Epidemiology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Conflicting findings exist regarding depression and mortality in elderly populations.
  • Previous studies often focused on psychiatric patients, potentially skewing results.
  • Variations in depression measures, populations, and attrition may explain discrepancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between depressive symptoms and mortality in an urban elderly community.
  • To examine how different patterns of depressive symptoms (persistent, emergent, remitted) relate to mortality.
  • To identify other risk factors for mortality in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Classified elderly residents into four groups based on depressive symptoms at two time points: N-N, N-D, D-N, D-D.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Utilized multivariate Cox regression models to analyze mortality risk.
  • Examined sociodemographic factors, health changes, functional status, chronic conditions, and social support.
  • Main Results:

    • Depressive symptoms, regardless of pattern, were not significantly associated with time-to-death.
    • Increased mortality risk was observed in older individuals.
    • Declines in health and functional status independently predicted higher mortality.
    • Male gender was also associated with a greater relative risk of mortality.

    Conclusions:

    • Depressive symptoms alone may not be a direct predictor of mortality in community-dwelling elderly.
    • Health decline, functional deterioration, and male sex are significant mortality risk factors in older adults.
    • Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay of factors influencing mortality in the elderly.
