Thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer association is rare. This study identified two groups: one with follicular thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism, and ten with thyrotoxicosis and unsuspected thyroid cancer, both managed effectively with surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • The link between thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer is uncommon and debated.
  • This study investigates clinical and pathological distinctions in such cases.

Observation:

  • Eleven cases were analyzed, divided into two groups.
  • Group 1: Follicular thyroid cancer with confirmed hyperthyroidism.
  • Group 2: Thyrotoxicosis (Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, toxic adenoma) with co-existing unsuspected thyroid carcinoma.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was confirmed via pathological examination of surgical specimens.
  • Surgery is the primary treatment, with extent determined by carcinoma presence.
  • Post-operative outcomes were favorable, with no morbidity or mortality.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Surgical management is effective for thyrotoxicosis with associated thyroid cancer.
  • Long-term follow-up showed positive survival rates (7/7 cases alive after 5 years).
  • Highlights the importance of pathological examination in thyrotoxicosis patients.
