Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Diagnostic Endoscopy

Background:

  • Capsule endoscopy (CE) is an advanced diagnostic tool for visualizing the gastrointestinal tract.
  • It utilizes a wireless capsule to capture images as it travels through the small intestine.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the authors' experience with capsule endoscopy.
  • To determine the indications, outcomes, and management strategies for positive findings.

Main Methods:

  • Patients underwent preparation with magnesium citrate and an 8-hour fast.
  • A sensor array and data recorder were used to capture images transmitted by the swallowed capsule.
  • Data was downloaded and reviewed on a computer workstation.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 226 capsule studies were performed in 209 patients, with indications including obscure bleeding, anemia, and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • A definitive source of bleeding was identified in 85 studies (51% yield), primarily angiodysplasia, mitotic lesions, and ulcers.
  • Capsule retention occurred in 8 studies without obstruction, with 3 managed endoscopically.

Conclusions:

  • Capsule endoscopy demonstrates a significant diagnostic yield in patients with obscure bleeding.
  • The procedure appears to have a low complication rate and high patient satisfaction.
  • Further cost-effectiveness and clinical outcome studies are needed to define optimal indications.
