Cystic fibrosis patients preferred smaller Creon 10,000 Minimicrospheres (MMS) capsules over Creon 8,000 ms. Both pancreatic enzyme formulations showed similar fat absorption, but the smaller capsules improved ease of use and compliance in children.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pediatrics
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Creon 10,000 Minimicrospheres (MMS) offers a pancreatic enzyme formulation with smaller spheres and capsules compared to Creon 8,000 ms.
  • Cystic fibrosis (CF) requires pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy to manage malabsorption.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate patient preference between Creon 10,000 MMS and Creon 8,000 ms in cystic fibrosis patients.
  • To compare the therapeutic equivalence of Creon 10,000 MMS and Creon 8,000 ms regarding fat absorption.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, three-center study involving 59 cystic fibrosis patients (age 3-17).
  • Patients used Creon 8,000 ms then were randomized to Creon 8,000 ms or Creon 10,000 MMS for 28 days each.
  • Stool fat excretion and coefficient of fat absorption (CFA) were measured in a subset of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant preference (87%) was observed for Creon 10,000 MMS over Creon 8,000 ms (P<0.0001).
  • Therapeutic equivalence was demonstrated, with no significant difference in stool fat excretion or CFA between the two formulations.
  • Both products were well-tolerated by the pediatric CF population.

Conclusions:

  • Cystic fibrosis children show a clear preference for the smaller Creon 10,000 MMS capsules.
  • The improved ease of administration with Creon 10,000 MMS is expected to enhance patient compliance.
  • Creon 10,000 MMS provides equivalent efficacy to Creon 8,000 ms with enhanced patient preference.
