Summary

Researchers produced pure gold and bimetallic silver-gold clusters using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI). Cluster composition and distribution were controllable by adjusting the gold to silver salt ratio, with sizes following a lognormal distribution.

Area of Science:

  • Physical Chemistry
  • Materials Science
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Gold clusters exhibit unique properties influenced by size and composition.
  • Understanding cluster formation is crucial for developing novel nanomaterials.
  • Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) is a versatile technique for cluster production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize pure gold (Aun+) and bimetallic silver-gold (AunAgm+/-) clusters.
  • To investigate the influence of reactant ratios on cluster formation and distribution.
  • To explore the applicability of the jellium model theory to observed cluster properties.

Main Methods:

  • Production of pure gold clusters (Aun+) up to n=100 using MALDI.
  • Synthesis of bimetallic silver-gold clusters using MALDI with HAuCl4/silver trifluoroacetate and HABA matrix.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of mass spectra to determine cluster ion intensity and size distribution.
  • Correlation analysis between salt molar ratios and cluster ion intensity ratios.
  • Main Results:

    • Observed alterations in ion intensity for odd-even sized gold clusters.
    • Noted intensity drops at cluster sizes predicted by the jellium model.
    • Established a linear correlation between the ratio of AunAgm+ to Au(n+1)Ag(m-1)+ ions and the gold to silver salt molar ratio.
    • Demonstrated control over cluster composition and distribution by varying salt ratios.
    • Found that cluster sizes follow a lognormal distribution.

    Conclusions:

    • MALDI is effective for producing pure and bimetallic gold-silver clusters with controllable compositions.
    • The jellium model provides a useful theoretical framework for understanding gold cluster properties.
    • The lognormal distribution suggests a specific growth mechanism for these clusters.
