Summary

Patients with idiopathic ulcerative colitis (IUC) and long disease duration may develop atypical epithelium. Goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH) correlates with disease duration and may indicate epithelial dysplasia in IUC.

Background:

  • Regular endoscopic surveillance with biopsies is crucial for managing IUC patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To correlate atypical epithelium, goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH), and disease duration (DD) with Ki67, AgNOR, and p53 expression in IUC patients.
  • To assess the utility of Ki67, AgNOR, and p53 as markers for dysplasia in chronic IUC.
  • To investigate the relationship between GCH and epithelial dysplasia in IUC.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 130 IUC cases, with 40 showing atypical epithelium selected for detailed study.

    • Goblet cell hyperplasia (GCH) may serve as an indicator for the presence of epithelial cell dysplasia in idiopathic ulcerative colitis.
    • p53 expression and AgNOR index are valuable markers in assessing epithelial changes in chronic IUC.
    • Further research into GCH as a predictive marker for dysplasia in IUC is warranted.
