Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Foot and Ankle Surgery
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Pseudoaneurysms result from arterial wall defects, causing localized swelling.
  • Iatrogenic injuries can lead to pseudoaneurysm formation.
  • Modified Lapidus arthrodesis is a surgical procedure for hallux valgus correction.

Observation:

  • A rare case of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm of the perforating deep plantar artery is presented.
  • The pseudoaneurysm developed one month after a modified Lapidus arthrodesis for hallux valgus.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed using Doppler ultrasonography.

Findings:

  • The pseudoaneurysm was successfully treated with surgical ligation of the affected artery and resection of the sac.
  • The patient experienced complete symptom resolution one year postoperatively.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, albeit rare, complication following hallux valgus surgery.
  • Accurate diagnosis via Doppler ultrasonography is crucial for effective management.
  • Surgical intervention provides a definitive treatment option for such vascular complications.
