Summary

Lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) levels are significantly elevated in preterm and term infants diagnosed with neonatal bacterial infection (NBI). This suggests LBP is a reliable biomarker for NBI, even in premature infants.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) concentrations in preterm infants suspected of neonatal bacterial infection (NBI).
  • To determine if LBP can serve as a diagnostic marker for NBI in this vulnerable population.

Main Methods:

  • Serum samples were collected from 57 preterm and 17 term infants within 72 hours of birth with suspected NBI.
  • LBP concentrations were measured at the time of initial suspicion and at 12 and 24 hours.
