Intraocular lens fixation with dacron.

G A Peyman, J E Koziol

Journal - American Intra-Ocular Implant Society
    |October 1, 1978

    Summary

Dacron mesh offers a novel method for intraocular lens fixation by bonding with the iris. This technique, tested in rabbits and primates, shows promise for preventing postoperative lens dislocation.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Biomaterials Science
    • Surgical Innovation

    Background:

    • Postoperative lens dislocation is a significant complication in intraocular lens implantation.
    • Current fixation methods may have limitations, necessitating improved techniques.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate Dacron (polyethylene terephthalate) mesh as a novel material for intraocular lens fixation.
    • To assess the biocompatibility and efficacy of Dacron in establishing a stable bond with the iris.

    Main Methods:

    • Experimental studies were conducted using rabbit and primate models.
    • Dacron mesh was attached to Binkhorst iris clip lenses and placed in contact with the iris.
    • Cellular reaction, tissue ingrowth, and fixation times were observed and recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Dacron induced a cellular reaction and bonded with the iris in both rabbit and primate eyes.
    • Lens fixation was achieved within 5 days in rabbits and 30 days in primates.
    • Combining Dacron with biodegradable silk accelerated tissue ingrowth in primates without adverse reactions.

    Conclusions:

    • Dacron mesh provides a viable and permanent method for intraocular lens fixation through iris bonding.
    • The Dacron-silk combination offers rapid tissue integration, while Dacron alone ensures long-term stability.
    • This approach holds potential for reducing postoperative lens dislocation complications.
