Summary
Colectomy in slow transit constipation patients did not impair peptide YY (PYY) release. Post-surgery PYY levels increased, though fasting levels were higher than in healthy controls.

- Slow transit constipation (STC) is a condition characterized by delayed colonic transit.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effect of total abdominal colectomy on plasma PYY release in patients with STC.
- To compare PYY release post-colectomy with pre-operative levels and healthy controls.

- Plasma PYY concentrations were measured in 10 STC patients before and after colectomy (3-24 months).

- Despite the removal of a major PYY source, the gut retains the capacity for PYY secretion.
- Altered fasting PYY levels post-colectomy warrant further investigation.
