Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Interventional Radiology

Background:

  • Buttock claudication can significantly impair quality of life.
  • Occlusion of the superior gluteal artery is a rare cause of buttock claudication.
  • Conventional treatments may be limited for gluteal artery disease.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with severe buttock claudication.
  • Neurologic and osteoarticular examinations were normal.
  • The patient had an occluded superior gluteal artery.

Findings:

  • Successful guidewire recanalization of the occluded superior gluteal artery was performed.
  • Percutaneous angioplasty with stenting was utilized.
  • The patient experienced complete symptom relief post-procedure.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case is the first to describe stent-assisted recanalization of the gluteal artery.
  • The technique shows promise for treating buttock pathology caused by gluteal artery occlusion.
  • Further research is warranted to evaluate this interventional approach.
