We optimized two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) power dividers using deterministic and global search algorithms. Both methods achieved excellent performance, demonstrating successful structural optimization for PhC devices.

Area of Science:

  • Photonics
  • Optical Engineering
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Two-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) are crucial for manipulating light.
  • Power dividers are essential components in photonic integrated circuits.
  • Optimizing PhC structures for efficient power division presents significant challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To numerically optimize the structure of two-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) power dividers.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of deterministic and global optimization algorithms for PhC design.
  • To achieve vanishing power reflection and perfect power balance in PhC power dividers.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a modified truncated Newton (TN) gradient search for deterministic local optimization.
  • Employed evolutionary optimization as a probabilistic global search strategy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Simulated PhC devices using the multiple-multipole (MMP) program within the MaX-1 software package.
  • Main Results:

    • Both optimization algorithms yielded reliable and promising solutions for PhC power dividers.
    • Achieved vanishing power reflection across the specified frequency range within the photonic bandgap.
    • Demonstrated perfect power balance at any specified frequency within the photonic bandgap.

    Conclusions:

    • Numerical structural optimization is feasible and highly successful for two-dimensional PhC power dividers.
    • The discrete nature of PhC structures does not impede optimization, even with localized intervention.
    • Advanced optimization techniques can overcome design constraints in photonic crystal devices.
