Insights
Adult intussusception is rare but often has a cause, unlike in children. This case highlights a jejunal heterotopic pancreas as a cause of adult intussusception and bowel obstruction.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Case Reports
Background:
- Intussusception is uncommon in adults, representing 0.1% of hospital admissions.
- Unlike in children, adult intussusception frequently has an identifiable underlying cause.
Observation:
- A 27-year-old female presented with subacute bowel obstruction.
- The obstruction was caused by intussusception originating from the jejunum.
Findings:
- A jejunal heterotopic pancreas was identified as the lead point causing the intussusception.
- Successful surgical management of the condition was achieved.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of investigating potential causes for adult intussusception.
- Heterotopic pancreas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of adult jejunal intussusception and bowel obstruction.
Context:
Intussusception in adults is rare, accounting for 0.1% of adult hospital admissions. In contrast to this, it is the leading cause of obstruction in children. In up to 90% of adults a cause can usually be found, but in children this is rarely the case.
Case Report:
We report the case of a 27-year-old lady with a subacute bowel obstruction caused by a jejunal heterotopic pancreas and describe its successful surgical management.
Conclusion:
The causes of intussusception in adults are discussed in the literature review.
